The wool is raised on the farm. The majority of my flock is Rambouiletts. That is a French Merino. A resourceful, hearty breed that does well on the rough mountain terrain where I live.
After shearing I send the raw wool out to Michigan to either of two woolen mills there that still cleans and cards wool for individual people. It is returned clean in spinning bats, I prefer that over roving's. I then spin the wool to the desired consistency, ply it into a two ply, dye if necessary.
A quick note about the cleaning process. Here in the USA there are environmental laws in place that are absent in other countries. I have found that most complaints about being “allergic” to wool is really as a result of the chemicals use to clean the imported wool. It is an exhaustive process (why I send my wool out.) Of course, there are certainly folks that have real allergies.
This year, 2008 I am slimming down the yarn. Instead of a heavy worsted weight that on a #8 needle gets 4 stitches per inch to 6 stitches per inch. So a skein, about 4oz (I do not sell by weight) was 150 yards, is now 200 yards. Don’t forget; most pattern suggested that you do a 1” square to check your scale.
I can still make yarn per your request. Need a super bulky? Can do. Need a special fiber spun? Let me know.
Custom Spinning: Yes I have done dog fiber. I will custom Spin most fibers. Email your questions and we will work something out. I do ask that the fiber, especially dog, come from a freshly cleaned animal.
If you want a yarn mixed with silk or something else, let me know, I am sure I can find the fiber for you! |
